Good public policy begins by defining the outcomes we want to achieve.

When policy debate is framed only around tax increases or spending cuts, it’s an argument created by and for political ideologues.

We can’t cut our way to fiscal responsibility. The hole is too deep. We can and should demand more for every tax dollar government spends.

Today, though, we face challenges on every front. The recession has stolen our security. Many of our institutions, including government, too often have failed us, looking out for special interests while common interests get shoved aside. People are angry, and they have good reason for their anger.

But we can’t build a future on anger. We won’t move forward if we spend our time pointing fingers and assigning blame for the past.
